Guided tour only (departure time: 16:30 – return time: 20:00). Reservation required.
The journey on board the Trenino Supramonte is dedicated to “All the Mysteries of Golgo. It starts from “Piazza Indipendenza”, in the center of Baunei, at 4:30 pm.
After passing the first stretch of breathtaking bends of the road to Golgo, the Trenino Supramonte reaches 650 meters, where you can admire the town of Baunei and the valley below. From here you can get a bird’s eye view of the whole Ogliastra: from the Gulf of Arbatax to the picks of mount Gennargentu.
The trip goes on along the “Bia Maore” (the “main road”), which leads to the heart of the plateau, where the Trenino Supramonte stops for the first time. This road is surrounded by forests of Olm Oaks and thick Mediterranean scrub.
Nearby, there are some basaltic pools called “As piscinas”.
After a short walk close to these precious water reserves, useful in a plateau where water sources are poor, the passenger is accompanied to “Su Sterru”. It is a spectacular 295 metres deep pit, which makes a great contribution to the Golgo’s fame.
The following stop is at the churchyard of the country church dedicated to St. Peter, very interesting from the archeological and religious points of view.
The third stop of the trip is dedicated to the ancient shepherds’ huts of the Supramonte and the evocation of the most significant moments in the life of the shepherds who have been working in these montains for thousands of years.
At the end of the tour, we will visit the mysterious “Rock Mask”, shaped in a vertical hidden rock, by the erosion of the atmospheric agents.
This spot can be reached by an old juniper ladder, built by the shepherds.
